The magic of rails golden age has been brought to life in Kilmeadan, Co Waterford. A heritage narrow gauge railway follows six kilometers of the abandoned Waterford - Dungarvan route, from the station at Kilmeadan to Carriganore. Experience the beauty of the Suir Valley from a period carriage as you take in the panoramic views of the river, rolling farmland and mountains. The track runs mostly along the picturesque banks of the River Suir offering a glimpse in to the world famous Mount Congreve Gardens.
This is an area rich in history dating back to the Vikings and is only accessible by train. The rolling stock includes a restored Simplex Locomotive, which had an arduous working life in the peat industry in the North of England and Scotland. It was also used in excavating the Channel Tunnel. It now pulls two partially open carriages traveling at 15km per hour. Other restored diesel engines are on display at the station.
We welcome school tours to Kilmeaden Station for a fun and educational trip on our train. At Halloween we run the scary Spooky Express, and at Christmas we run the very popular Santa Express. We also run trains during the February Mid Term Break and the October Mid Term Break.
No Car... No Problem
In partnership with Suirway Bus & Coach Services you can now get on board the Suirway Bus in Waterford City and travel to Kilmeadan Station. Full details of departure times and fares are available in our No Car... No Problem brochure.
