Looking for a school tour that’s packed with fun, fresh air, and fascinating history? Step into a real-life railway adventure at the Waterford Suir Valley Railway in Kilmeadan, Co. Waterford — where little explorers become time travellers for the day!

The adventure begins the moment your class arrives at beautifully restored Kilmeadan Station.  The fun starts even before departure! On arrival, each child receives a treasure hunt sheet featuring 12 items to find – seven hidden around the station while they watch out for a further three during the journey. It’s the perfect way to encourage observation skills, teamwork, and curiosity.

Teachers “check in” at the ticket office — cleverly created inside a converted Mark II railway carriage — before meeting the friendly train drivers.  With a wave and a whistle, it’s time to climb aboard! Children are escorted to their very own private compartments, ready to begin a magical rail journey through the stunning Suir Valley.

🌿 A Journey Through Nature & History

As the train gently chugs along at a child-friendly pace, pupils enjoy spectacular views of the River Suir and the rolling Waterford countryside from the partially open carriages.  This is a landscape rich in history — and only accessible by train or the Waterford Greenway — making the experience feel even more special.

Highlights along the way include:

• 🌳 A stop at the enchanting Magic Woods, where children can spot the fairies and make a wish

• 🚇 A thrilling ride through a 40-metre tunnel under the N25

• 🌸 A glimpse into the world-famous Mount Congreve Gardens

For younger children especially, the charm of the little diesel engine, the narrow-gauge track, and the cosy carriages make this a perfectly sized adventure.

The full 17km round trip lasts approximately 50 minutes — just the right length to keep everyone engaged and excited.
